This website allows teachers to keep track of children’s grades on line. It automatically updates their grade point averages and their class standings. Mygradebook.com also allows teachers to keep track of attendance on-line and when a student is tardy or absent to automatically send out emails to their parents. There is a tool that produces reports for administrators both on attendance and on grades. Finally teachers can also provide access codes to parents to allow them to access their child’s grades from their computers at home. This same access can be given to students who like to keep track of the grades they receive on their assignments and how they are doing in the classroom. (Melissa Smith)

The Kids Know It Network

http://www.kidsknowit.com/

Grades: K-5

Discipline: All subject areas

This is a great supplemental site that students can use at for independent projects in class or just practice and fun at home. Different parts can be used for different ages. The spelling lists can be difficult to use at home since there are hundreds and they aren’t labeled by age or grade level. A teacher can go through and try to find a list that could work for their class, but it could be tedious as there are so many. The spelling games, however can be fun for students to practice their spelling and unscrambling skills. The sciences links are great for a mid-level elementary student. Some of the words can be difficult to understand for younger elementary students, and the descriptions are not in depth enough for an upper elementary, but 2nd to 4th graders should be able to use them for information. The math link is also great for that mid-elementary student and also for the younger students, but there aren’t many activities for the upper elementary students to take advantage of. (Amanda Griffith)

There are some great math and science worksheets as well as fun worksheets for special occasions. In addition, there are activities for foreign language and science. While most of these worksheets, stories, and activities are for elementary students, there are a few activities for high school students and for test prep. To access all of the supplemental materials from this site, you need to subscribe and pay $19.99 for a basic subscription and $39.98 for an everything subscription. There are also school license subscriptions, the price of which depends on the number of teachers, subscription length, and type of subscription. (Amanda Griffith)

One can easily copy the worksheet onto their common word processor and print out the worksheet from there. (Hannah Kim)

This website is an extension of The Discovery Channel and has many different resources for teachers. The site has hundreds of lesson plans for K through 12, in all different subjects, with other activities and extensions that link to those lessons. Many of their lessons correspond to different VHS and DVDs that they sell online as well. There is a link for Kathy Schrock’s Guide, which is a list of all sorts of other sites that are useful for both enhancing lessons and curriculum as well as professional development of teachers. The site has other “fun tools” like worksheets, clipart, brain busters, etc, however I would say there are many other sites that have a bigger and better set of worksheets. It does have a whole section dedicated to science fair information and resources that would be very helpful to older level science classes. There is a whole section dedicated to helping new teachers with things like classroom management, parent communication, and other “survival tools.” Finally, the site offers contests and grants for individual students to participate in. There is no subscription or registration required for this site, so it is available to everyone. (Amanda Griffith)

There are lesson plans, worksheets, links for new teachers, and other information about strategies and theories in the classrooms. For students, there are hundreds of online activities for every subject you can possibly think of, and with each of the activities comes a whole plan for teachers about how to use it with a whole lesson. Also, if you’re lucky enough to have a scholastic subscription sent to your classroom, there are many online activities that link to those newspaper articles. This is an amazing site! Definitely one of my favorites that I’ve found! (Amanda Griffith)

All of their resources are standards-based, so they are all ready to use to satisfy those standards you need help planning for. There are some great, creative lesson plans and activities available on this site. There are also links for professional development, where teachers can actually sign up for and take online classes in many areas for a fee, and PBS Teachers Connect, which is a forum for teachers to discuss different topics that are of interest to today’s teachers. PBS Teachers Connect does require registration, although I don’t think there is a fee. This is a great website for teachers to use when looking for lesson ideas and resources. (Amanda Griffith)

ELD Picture File

http://www.clipart.com/en/index (Jeanette M. King)

Discipline(s): Visual Aids Grade Level(s): Teaching Tools Web

Description: I ask my mom for a clipart.com subscription for Christmas every year. One of the primary concepts I learned from my class on teaching ELD students is that the old adage is true – a picture is worth a thousand words. If there are over 10 million images on this site to download, how many words does that equal? After using it for a number of years, I have an extensive picture file to use to clarify for my second language learners, bulletin boards, PowerPoint presentations, etc.

Enchanted Learning

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.html (Jeanette M. King)

Discipline(s): Cross-Curricular Grade Level(s): Preschool, Elementary, and Middle School levels

Description: I don’t know why I always hear, “Don’t use worksheets!” I never used them to teach a concept, but they are great for other uses. I have found students with learning disabilities often get anxious with independent open-ended assignments: They don’t know what to do exactly, or how much to do. I have found that worksheets work well for centers and homework. It is clear when the assignment is finished, there is usually an example problem, and they are usually not too complicated. Let’s not forget the fun factor - they can often be colored. Worksheets are also good for enabling parents who speak little English to help their children with their homework. Enchanted Learning has a variety of worksheets to print for free, and for a fee, you can subscribe to get access to more worksheets and other teaching tools.

Brain Pop

http://www.brainpop.com/ (Jeanette M. King)

Discipliorne(s): Cross-Curricular Grade Level(s): Grades 3 and up

Animation is that much more helpful, as cartoons are motivating and stand up to frequent repetition. Our school subscribed to it, and I used it regularly as a research tool, a study tool, center activity, and a positive reward. There is a free trial available.
