Stone House

Quote:
One builds science with facts like a house can be built of stones, but an accumulation of facts is not a science like that a pile of stones is not a house.
Henri PoincaréExplanation: You need understanding of the facts and ideas to link them together to build any body of knowledge or field of study. Same applies to using stones to build a house.
Just acquiring facts is not knowledge that is useful. Facts alone do not lead to understanding and application. They must be organized, and connected in such a way that there is a clear cause and effect relationship among them.
If this is true about science, which is learning about the natural world, then it seems to also be true about learning in general. Teachers should be careful that the classroom experience they manage does not consist merely of the transmission of bits of knowledge without the relations among those facts being taught. This has significant importance for not only the content, but the methodologies chosen by the classroom teacher!
