Intervention

  • play music in class for 1 week (5 consecutive class meetings)
    • music playing as students come in and for the very beginning of class
    • play music during independent work and/or group work
    • students with ipods need to shut them off
    • students are prompted to stay quiet enough so the teacher can hear the music
  • the rest of the class is as normal as possible
  • If students ask about the music - "I just wanted to try something new"

Control

  • If there are two evenly matched classes
    • have a class that does not use music for 1 week (or 5 days)
  • OR test students without music first and with music after
