Sound Production
Children's Misconception of What Causes Sound
- The physical attribute of the object is involved (ex. the tautness of the drum)
- Referring to the force needed to produce the sound (ex. force of object hitting the drum)
- Vibrations
Very few children explained that sound came from vibrations, however, even fewer were able to articulate that the sound was coming from vibrations with the air surrounding the object and not the object itself.
Sound Transmission
Students have a difficult time understanding that sound travels. Those who did believe that sound traveled thought of it much like rain falls and an umbrella stops the rain, anything in the way of the sound would stop the sound, much like an umbrella on the rain. Only an unobstructed path could cause the sound to travel.
Sound Meeting Surfaces
Focused around Sound Absorption... Children have very little understanding on this topic. Many students explained that when an object making sound is covered up, the sound has been trapped or we can hear very little of it because only a little sound is leaking through gaps. None of them were able to explain it in terms of vibrations.
Representing Sound
A wide range of notions were used to represent sound: including words, lines, arrows, shading and musical notes. Some children thought that sound spread out and some thought that it traveled in a straight line to the intended receiver,
