Description: This site is geared towards kids who are interested in science. They have different games about plants, animals, and insects and how they relate to us. For example, it has kids build a salad with common things we use but instead of calling them their name (carrot) it says what group they belong too (a root). In the salad there are leaves, roots, fruits, flowers and stems. It is interesting and interactive for the kids because it relates to many things in their everyday lives. (Christina Sermak)

The easy-to-use site contains a variety of links to videos, games, stories, photos, activities, people & places, and animals, among others. There are quizzes and stories about pirates and dinosaurs, travel blogs written by children, and silly videos of animals. I think that this site would have a wide appeal across the different gender and age groups of children. It also is environmentally educational and would speak to those children who are interested in nature and animals. (Susan Boorujy)

Kids Know It
Discipline: Science/ Multi
Grade level: 2nd-8th
Website address: http://www.kidsknowit.com/
Description: The biology site listed second is one of many links available on the kidsknowit.com homepage (astronomy, mathematics, paleontology, etc.). The biology link shows a drawing of a body, arms outstretched. On the left are tabs, each identifying a different subject: muscles, bones, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, excretory, endocrine, and nervous. I selected bones, and was then linked to a simply worded explanation of the human skeletal structure. It was lengthy, but easy to follow. Each page offered the option of going forward for more information on bones, or back to the information on the previous page. There is a distracting amount of advertising on each page. (Jenny Graham)

Discipline Science
Grade Level3-8
Web Site Address http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/
Description This website offers older students the opportunity to play computer games within the different Science modalities of “Living Things,” “Materials” and “Physical Processes.” Perhaps the best part of this website is the fact that on each game, the student can choose to either play a game, read about the topic of the game or take a quiz, or do all three! The students can choose between 27 games between those three categories. These 27 games can lead to several different activities for both the teacher as supplemental lessons during the classroom and for parents at home. Sometimes students at home only want to play the video games or computer games at home, so this will be perfect for those students who need some type of computer “stimulation” during the day; the students will learn while they are satisfying their needs for fun at home, only they will be learning Science lessons instead of mindless video games. (Mary Loynes)

Discipline Science
Grade Level3-7
Web Site Address http://www.worldbook.com/wb/Feature?id=http://www.worldbook.com/wb/worldbook/cybercamp/html/walk.html
Description The Worldbook Encyclopedia has several links that will be of interest to all students, not only those interested in Science. One link has a “Nature Walk” where the students click on various plants and animals to learn about what they would see if they were on an actual nature walk. Simply reading about nature and science in a book can be boring for some students, and this website makes science as real and authentic as possible for the students without actually taking them out into the “wild.” When clicking on the “Atlas” link away from the “nature walk” link, students can click on a world map and atlas of the entire globe portraying detailed visuals for the students of all parts of Earth. Another link posted, http://www.worldbook.com/wb/Students?science_projects/dinosaur, has step-by-step instructions for students to build their own Tyrannosaurus, which is another wonderful way for parents and siblings to spend time together during holidays and weekends. (Mary Loynes)

Science Daily

Discipline: Science Grade level: 9-12 Website: http://www.sciencedaily.com/ Description: This is an online science magazine that features breaking news in the world of science. I thought that this would be a great thing for high school science teachers to implement in their classrooms from time to time. It could be used as a resource for students to do current events and stay up to date on important advances in the field of science. I think it’s important to stress that a subject like science is always changing so it’s important to stay current on all of the issues. This website will certainly help students and teachers accomplish this. (Stephanie Perry)

Discipline: Physical Science: Gravity Grade Levels: 2-5 Website Address: http://www.instructorweb.com/lesson/gravity.asp#LESSON_PRINTABLES

This website had a great introduction to an understanding gravity lesson plan. It discusses the common misconception that weight and mass are often mistakenly used interchangeably. The lesson also provides a great definition of the word gravity that could easily be understood by 2nd through 5th graders, with modifications made when necessary. The page also said that there was a worksheet to go along with the lesson. A link was provided for the worksheet, but you had to register for the website and fill out a long information sheet to be able to have access to the other information that the website has to offer. I would use this page as an introduction to a gravity lesson before doing a more hands-on activity with elementary school students. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Physical Science: Mass Grade Levels: 5-6 Website Address: http://www.iit.edu/~smile/phma1700.htm

This website provided a fun but time consuming lesson for the upper grades (5th and 6th). This lesson involves the students making their own paper helicopters and parachutes that they would drop from an agreed upon height to see if mass has anything to do with their landing times. They would attach different amounts of paper clips to the parachutes and helicopters to test their hypotheses. What I liked about this lesson is that they provided you with the instructions on how to make the helicopters and the parachutes. The instructions also came with pictures, which I always think is helpful when you are trying to construct something. There was also a step-by-step strategy procedure that was followed with a culminating activity that relayed the objectives listed at the top of the website. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Science Grade level: K-6 Web Site Address: http://www.sciencewithme.com/ Description: This website is created for elementary school students who are interested in learning science in a fun way. Discipline: Science Grade Levels: K-12 Website Address: http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/matrix.cfm

This is such a great overall science resource. On this page you are able to choose from a plethora of science lesson plans that are divided into four sections of grade levels: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. On the left hand side of the chart are the names of the specific lesson plans and the grade levels that they should be taught in. Some of the topics include: animals, farming, the moon, making good decisions, simple machines, the sun, water, fossils, weather, magnets, nutrition, etc. I would come back to this site if I ever needed an idea for any science lesson. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Physical Science: Magnetism Grade Level: 2nd Website Address: http://www.cstone.net/~bcp/2/2OSci.htm

This website offers a second grade unit on magnetism. It provides teachers with different activities they could do to teach the concept of magnets. It also lists books that you could display around the classroom so that students could continue investigating about magnetism during IWT time for example, or during their silent reading time. Some of the experiments include activities where the students have to find out what materials are magnetic and which materials aren't and different activities with compasses, magnetic fields, and poles. There were questions for the students to answer during the lesson in a worksheet format that you could easily type up on your computer. There was also homework suggestions that would help reinforce what was taught in class. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Physical Science: Magnetism and Polarity Grade Levels: 3-5 Website Address: http://teachers.net/lessons/posts/1.html

This website offers a really cute hands-on lesson to teach the concept of magnetism. According to the website, this would be the motivation that the students would do: "Have all the students stand in a circle facing the center. Explain the rule that if they are facing the same direction they can not touch each other. If they are facing in the opposite direction than their neighbors, then they need to make a connection and hold hands." I liked this idea because it is a really concrete and explicit way for students to understand this rather abstract concept. In addition, the lesson has the students explore before the teacher introduces the concept. That way, the students can make their own discoveries and construct their own knowledge. This website is laid out as a standard lesson plan with objectives, prerequisite skills needed, materials needed, a procedure and an extension. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

This website is also a great resource that teachers could use when teaching about magnets. This website offers 11 different activities and lessons that could be used during science time. The activities on the website were neatly organized. They started with the title of the lesson, the intended objective and goals, the materials needed, the prior knowledge that the students need to complete the experiment, vocabulary, the procedure, and then evaluation and assessment. This would be a great resource to look at when thinking of lessons to use for CSUN, since the format is almost the same as the College of Education format for lesson plans. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Earth Science: The Sun and the Moon

Grade Levels: 3rd

Website Address: http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview.cgi?LPid=2359 http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/LPview?core=3

This website provides a lesson plan that integrates the physical sciences and the earth sciences. This lesson deals with the moon and how we see it at night because the sun reflects off of its surface. The moon does not create its own light like the sun, which is a common misconception that many students have. The experiment found on this website is easy to follow and seems like something that 3rd grade students would really enjoy. They are to take an orange and cover it up with aluminum foil. Then the teacher shines a flashlight on the moon to show that light reflects off of the surface of the moon. This lesson covers two content standards at once. The second website is the home site that has many other science lessons to do with 3rd grade science content standards. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Physical Science Grade Levels: 1-2 Website Address: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/light_dark.shtml

This is a really cute interactive quiz that will test the students' knowledge on what objects give out light. Students are to drag certain objects into the center of the darkened room. Then they can see which objects make their own light and which objects reflect light. The students can drag things like a flashlight, a candle, a jack-o-lantern, and a lamp to see that these objects create their own light when the room is dark. But when you drag the disco ball into the center of the dark room, the room remains dark. There are also questions at the top of the page that prompt the students' thinking as to what they should be seeing and understanding. Then, when the students think that they have mastered this concept, they can then take a quiz to test their knowledge on light. This would be fun for students to do during IWT time or as a whole class review session. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Science Grade Level: 3rd Website Address: http://www.hazelwood.k12.mo.us/~cdavis01/map2000/3rd.html

This website has powerpoints that a teacher could use to introduce many scientific concepts in her classroom, from space, water, ecology, and matter. For example, the first presentation that I checked was an introduction to matter. The first slide provides both the teacher and students the content standards that they will be covering during the upcoming lesson. Then it went into an activity that made students classify shapes into different categories to go along with the standard that matter can be classified based on physical properties. But when I tried to look at the other powerpoints, I wasn't able to view them either the page was busy or it no longer existed. These powerpoints (if they had worked) would be a quick and easy way for teachers to start off a science lesson, while modeling the use of technology. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Science Grade Level: 3rd Website Address: http://www.quia.com/pages/3sciences.html#matter

This website provided links to various science activities. Some links didn’t work, but the sites that did work were a lot of fun and would be enjoyed by students. There was an interactive matter page where you could click on buttons to either heat or cool an object to see what would happen to it (freeze or melt). After these mini-lessons, there would be a quiz that you could take to see if you learned the content. The quizzes were easy to understand and fun to take. There was also a great "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" type game that was really fun that asked different questions about the different states of matter. This would be fun to play as a whole class or individually for students during IWT time. There were fun matching games that dealt with space topics and putting in order the different phases of the moon. (Kelly Iannuzzi)

Discipline: Life Science: Digestion Grade Levels: 4-5 Website Address: http://hes.ucfsd.org/gclaypo/digestive_system.html This website is a kid-friendly site.
