Discipline: earth science (water cycle)
Grade Level: 1-3
Description: “Morphie’s Great Water Ride Adventure” is an online narrative about a water drop named Morphie who changes his form as he travels through the water cycle. The story can be read online or downloaded and printed out for students to read on paper. By integrating the science topic with a narrative plot, appealing character, and illustrations, this narrative input strategy helps students gain a clearer understanding of what water actually does throughout the water cycle. There is also a poster that can be printed out for students to label the different parts of the water cycle. For a challenge, students could write a sequel in which Morphie goes through the water cycle in a different order because, although it is a cycle, water does not have to travel in the same order all the time. Students select a photograph to practice their skills in analyzing historical documents. As students enter the upper elementary grades, they will encounter more and more primary sources and historical documents. It is important that students receive direct instruction in how to analyze them for additional information and make inferences in relation to the events taking place at the time. After choosing a photograph, students pose a question from a list of options that they want to gather clues about. Next, students roll over the picture to gather clues. On a virtual notepad, students type in objective observations. They may also read a brief paragraph about background information for the photograph. Finally, students are ready to draw a final conclusion about the purpose of the historical document and fill in the sheet to answer their original question. (Alison Munson)

After reading the text and analyzing the illustrations in each, students draw a conclusion about what order the panels correctly go in: first, second, third. If correct, students must answer three questions about that comic strip that rely heavily on inferring using the strip’s dialogue and illustrations. For a challenge, students can create their own comic strip using “Garfield’s Comic Creator” at www.garfield.com/fungames/comiccreator.html and write their own original questions with multiple choice answers that make the reader infer. Having the students provide an answer key lets the teacher know if the student can actually draw conclusions. (Alison Munson)

Pumps Your Blood
Web Site Address: http://www.dgs.k12.il.us/heart.htm
Discipline: life science and music (circulatory system)
Grade Level: 5
Description: This website contains the printed lyrics, actual music, and visual diagrams of the heart for the song “Pumps Your Blood” sung by Anson Williams. This song is associated with the show “Happy Days” in which one of the characters had his friends help him create a song to remember important information about the heart and circulatory system for a high school test. The CA standard for fifth graders states that students must learn “how blood circulates through the heart chambers, lungs, and body, and how carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) are exchanged in the lungs and tissues.” By singing along to the song over repeated sessions and tracing the flow of blood on the diagram, students are utilizing multiple learning modalities to better remember this important sequence.
