DSO Kids

Website: http://www.dsokids.com (submitted by Rosemary Blankson)

Discipline: Music

Grade level: 2-6

Description: This website is owned and operated by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. It is an extension of the Dallas Symphony orchestra program, which brings classical music into public schools nationwide. A nice touch to this website is that it is has two lounges-one for ‘kids’ and one for teachers. The site presents fun, accessible and student-friendly resources to musical learning. There are several websites like this that support local symphony arts programs. Most of them like this one implement the same kinds of activities of musical instrument identification through sight and sound, orchestral seating charts, composition, historical facts of composers and music theory. Unlike the other music learning websites however, the kids (student) page adds components of instrument making and fun activities to do at home. The teacher’s lounge also provides a wealth of resources for instruction. Not only does it have music lessons but it also has lessons that relate on a cross-curricular level. Lessons are found in a searchable database in three categories: by youth concert program, by subject and by grade level.

PBS

Website: http://www.pbs.org (submitted by Rosemary Blankson)

Discipline: Music, cross-curricular

Grade level: K-6

Description: This site is a wonderful musical education site that promotes various musical concepts appropriate for grade levels kindergarten to sixth grade. There are two pages to the overall site that are musical (pbs.org/music and pbs.org/jazz). Both pages can serve primary grades and are interactive and very user friendly. The music page seems more tailored for the lower primary level. It has music activities that are cross-curricular as well as activities that engage the student in sing-a-longs, instrument identification and music creation. The jazz page however, is mostly geared toward the upper primary grades. The jazz page has activities and lesson plans been designed for use with the PBS JAZZ video series (JAZZ, a documentary by Ken Burns aired January, 2001). The lesson plans may also be adapted for use as stand alone resources. What’s unique about this site is that the activities have accompanying lesson plans for language arts, social studies, music, and math teachers.

On the site there are five pages for students to explore which meet the national curriculum standards for music education. On the site students are introduced to concepts such as pitch differentiation, melodic direction, music notation, pitch duration and basic music theory. The most important element of the site is that students are mostly encouraged to create first then learn from their creation

Music Theory

Website: http://www.musictheory.net (submitted by Rosemary Blankson)

Discipline: Music

Grade level: 4-12 and beyond

Description: This site is dedicated to the instruction of music theory and is available in seven languages including standard American English. The presentation of the website and concepts are very straight forward yet seem intended to be used as an extension to students that are more advanced. For this reason I recommend that it be used from grade four through the secondary school level and even onward. For example an elementary teacher may use this site as extra credit for a gifted student or a student who has a history playing a musical instrument. Musictheory.net is very simple in its definition of musical vocabulary even to the adult novice. It incorporates listening and visual examples in its step by step lessons which facilitate differentiated instruction.

Early America

Interactive music, movies and printable games serve as extension activities for students and make learning about U.S. history exciting and interesting.

Fun Brain

Website:http://www.funbrain.com/notes/index.html (submitted by Kat Howell)

Discipline: Music

Grade level: 6-12

Description: This site offers 3 basic music games and within that lots of options for other disciplines. You can pick different grade levels and difficulties within the games. Some you would have to have prior knowledge, so they could be used at different levels within the curriculum. The “Stay Afloat” is hangman; “Piano Player” tests knowledge of note reading skills, bass and treble clef; and “Scramblesaurus” is scrambled names that you figure out given clues. Stay Afloat tests their knowledge of different instruments by learning the spelling. Piano Player is a good game for testing themselves on their note reading abilities. They are shown a note on the clef and then have to find it on the piano keyboard so they have to both know the note name, as well as where to find it on the piano. Scramblesaurus is a way to review composer’s names and facts. The more they know about a composer, the quicker they will be able to identify the name within the scrambled letters and meanwhile they will also review facts about the composer’s life and achievements. They can also choose musical instruments or sound recording for word searches.

Discipline: Music Grade Level: K-12 Web Site Address: http://www.sfskids.org/templates/splash.asp Description: San Francisco Symphony is interactive website for students, teacher and parents, which divides up the instruments based on the four categories (strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion). Once the students pick a category the website provides a brief history of the instruments, and then the students get to hear the music each instrument makes. This is great resources to have the students be familiar with different sounds of the instruments. In addition, at the music lab, students can learn music vocabulary (tempo, rhythm, pitch and so on) and listen to example of each (Navneet Kaur).
