Discipline: Music

Grade level: 2-6

Description: This website is owned and operated by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. It is an extension of the Dallas Symphony orchestra program, which brings classical music into public schools nationwide. A nice touch to this website is that it is has two lounges-one for ‘kids’ and one for teachers. The site presents fun, accessible and student-friendly resources to musical learning. There are several websites like this that support local symphony arts programs. Most of them like this one implement the same kinds of activities of musical instrument identification through sight and sound, orchestral seating charts, composition, historical facts of composers and music theory. Unlike the other music learning websites however, the kids (student) page adds components of instrument making and fun activities to do at home. The teacher’s lounge also provides a wealth of resources for instruction. Not only does it have music lessons but it also has lessons that relate on a cross-curricular level. Lessons are found in a searchable database in three categories: by youth concert program, by subject and by grade level.

PBS

Website: http://www.pbs.org (submitted by Rosemary Blankson)

Discipline: Music, cross-curricular

Grade level: K-6

Description: This site is a wonderful musical education site that promotes various musical concepts appropriate for grade levels kindergarten to sixth grade. There are two pages to the overall site that are musical (pbs.org/music and pbs.org/jazz). Both pages can serve primary grades and are interactive and very user friendly. The music page seems more tailored for the lower primary level. It has music activities that are cross-curricular as well as activities that engage the student in sing-a-longs, instrument identification and music creation. The jazz page however, is mostly geared toward the upper primary grades. The jazz page has activities and lesson plans been designed for use with the PBS JAZZ video series (JAZZ, a documentary by Ken Burns aired January, 2001). The lesson plans may also be adapted for use as stand alone resources. What’s unique about this site is that the activities have accompanying lesson plans for language arts, social studies, music, and math teachers.

Creating Music

Grade level: K-5

Description: Creatingmusic.com is an online creative music environment for children of all ages. It's a place for kids to compose music, play with musical performance, music games and music puzzles. On the site there are five pages for students to explore which meet the national curriculum standards for music education. Music Theory

Website: http://www.musictheory.net (submitted by Rosemary Blankson, edited by K. Anderberg)

Discipline: Music

Grade level: K-12 and beyond

Description: This site is dedicated to the instruction of music theory, from the basics to advanced music theory principles, and the interactive lessons are straight forward and extremely easy to use and navigate. The site is also available in seven languages, including standard American English. The site has 3 parts: Lessons, Trainers, and Utilities. Lessons include elementary lessons appropriate for children K-12, such as definitions of minor and major scales, rests, note measurements, etc. The Training component is interactive, including audio, and is a fabulous learning tool. The training section has exercises where students can listen to two tones and then identify the type of interval, there is a trainer exercise where you plot the fingering of guitar chords on a fret and one like it for piano or brass instruments, as well. There is a trainer for different types of scale recognition, such as dorian, ionian, etc. These training components are invaluable for music students. The final category offered is utilities and there are three: chord calculator, staff paper generator, and matrix generator. The chord generator makes chords of certain intervals in certain keys; the staff paper generator allows students to print their own blank staff paper, and the matrix generator is not anything I could understand so it needs some clarity to it still. Overall, this is an extensive site full of music education tools from the most basic to very complex, and I highly recommend it. My mother was a music teacher, and I was learning notes and staffs, and how to write music at the age of 5, and these tools on this site simulate much of what my mother taught me, thus I recommend them to even young children, to begin laying down the groundwork for the language of music.

Fun Brain

Website:http://www.funbrain.com/notes/index.html (submitted by Kat Howell)

Discipline: Music

Grade level: 6-12

Description: This site offers 3 basic music games and within that lots of options for other disciplines. You can pick different grade levels and difficulties within the games. Some you would have to have prior knowledge, so they could be used at different levels within the curriculum. The “Stay Afloat” is hangman; “Piano Player” tests knowledge of note reading skills, bass and treble clef; and “Scramblesaurus” is scrambled names that you figure out given clues. Stay Afloat tests their knowledge of different instruments by learning the spelling. Piano Player is a good game for testing themselves on their note reading abilities. They are shown a note on the clef and then have to find it on the piano keyboard so they have to both know the note name, as well as where to find it on the piano. Scramblesaurus is a way to review composer’s names and facts. The more they know about a composer, the quicker they will be able to identify the name within the scrambled letters and meanwhile they will also review facts about the composer’s life and achievements. They can also choose musical instruments or sound recording for word searches.
