I want to gain insight on problem solving skills that two middle school students can utilize. I will present a situation that requires a strategic answer, and allow them to choose three tools from a list of ten. Then they will rationalize their tools, choices, and strategy to solve the problem. The solution will already be chosen, and they need to find their way to the desired solution. There will be a variety of strategies to achieve the solution, and a limit to the number of attempts or chances to be successful.

For example: You are in a shopping mall and you have seen a theft. You don’t have anything with you, but your clothes. In this situation I will give you a choice of ten items, of which you can choose three. The goal is to catch the culprit in five moves. What do you do???
