Algebra Balance Scales - Negatives
Discipline: Mathematics
Grade level: 9-12
Web Site Address: http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_324_g_4_t_2.html?open=instructions&from=category_g_4_t_2.html
Description: This is software designed for producing a Balance Scale manipulative for learning algebraic equations involving negatives. You interact with the software by selecting and moving boxes (Xs and 1s) and balloons (-Xs and -1s).
The software gives feedback by keeping the beam balanced or unbalanced; depending on the values you place on the balance. The program also walks you through the steps and shows you when you find the value of X. (Jonathan Minor)
Essentially, students are able to conceptualize the reason behind certain operations in balancing an equation. You may relate this to the color in the balloons (i.e. red for negative), and having to place the exact same object on either side of the balance scale (the old math cliche, "what you do on one side of the equation you must do to the other"). The rationale behind this activity is that of different intelligences (Howard Gardner). I believe this is particularly good for students who are visual learners.

Website: http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/games/kp/kp_hotmath_sound.swf

This is free and fun to play and it gives students a lot of repetition and it gets more challenging as the game goes on. Students can also print out their scores to show to their teacher. It has cute graphics and even some silly music. When you correctly input the equation of a line, the cockroach is killed with the weapon of choice and the crowd applauds. Kill the cockroaches using y=mx + b. Students can use their knowledge of equations of straight lines and their weapon of choice (my favorite is the shoe, it’s so satisfying) to kill the cockroaches moving along a straight line on the graph. The game provides students with hints and gives a few redos if they get it wrong. A great way to practice and understand the use of slope and y-intercept when graphing linear equations.

Description:
This website allows teachers and students to explore different math topics and concepts with virtual manipulatives. This site is beneficial as some manipulatives are expensive or hard to find or make; having them online allows for more students to be exposed to the manipulatives and have more time to practice and explore with them. Having the manipulatives online also allows teachers to present the information in a different format so that students of different learning styles can be taught. This website is broken up by grade level or by the different branches of Math. This makes finding the correct material easier as teachers or students can search by topic or grade. 8. Fun Brain Disciplines- Math and Reading Grade Levels- First Grade to Eighth Grade Website Address- www.funbrain.com Description- This site was very entertaining for me. There were lessons on math and reading through
games. For each game it allows the student to give his/her gender and what grade level
they are, so the activity matches their level. For instance, if you pick grade level one,
the site will choose an activity that has to do with adding for the student since that is
what he/she should be learning. The activities are cool because the student needs to pass
the activity given in order to move onto another game. The reading link provides students
with a few books they can actually read on the site like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid. They
can choose which pages they want to read and jump around. It would have been nice to
have an audio option, but it does not. The reading link also allows students to do Mad Libs
which helps them to practice using nouns, verbs and adjectives. The outcome is a silly
story for the students to enjoy. The Mad Libs are nice because it gives students an option
to choose from lists of nouns, verbs and adjectives provided or the student can type in their
own response. Other fun games are provided where students learn how to follow
directions. It is a very colorful and easy to maneuver site. The site allows students to learn
through games. (Grace Hong)

Math Playground
Discipline: Mathematics
Grade Levels: K-8
'Web Site Address: www.mathplayground.com
Description: The title of this web site is misleading. It is not a fun playground, but more of a busy, confusing web page. It is difficult to navigate around the site--it should be more accessible, especially as it is a website for kids. The site lacks color and personality, and is therefore less appealing to students who would want to become exited about learning math. The site does have a great word problems section that is interactive and fun. However, it does not explicitly state when you have completed a word problem correctly, but only does so when you are wrong. The site definitely needs some work, but has a good foundation for doing math online. (Katherine Warner)

School.DiscoveryEducation.com (Melissa Quesada) Discipline(s): English/Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Health, Micro World, Technology, and specific areas of Math and English. Grade Levels(s): This site is appropriate for K-12 students.
The Website address is: http://school.discoveryeducation.com.
This site has a five main categories with many sub listings underneath. The main categories are: Products and Resources, Classroom Resources, Home Resources, Professional Development, and Store. Some of the things you can access under these sub listings are: Curricular Resources, Assessment, Hardware, Puzzle maker, Lesson plans, Featured Content, Parent Corner, Science Fair Central, Discovery Student Adventures, and Contests and Grants. The things teachers and students get gain from this site are many. Students can find out how to enter, qualify, and win a trip to a place like Rome, parents can receive math instruction under the Home Resources tab. This site is science related, relates and works with NASA, and seems to be a great resource for students, parents, teachers, and other professionals in the education profession.
EZSchool.com (Melissa Quesada) Discipline(s): Math, English/Language Arts, Science, and Spanish. Grade Levels(s): Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. The Website address is: http://ezschool.com.
This site is very easy to navigate. It only covers four academic disciplines so it is not overwhelming. The site has big tabs and the information is organized in a neat and easy way. It has worksheets, games, study tools, tutorials, spelling, reader, and store. The worksheets section did not seem to include any on science. The Games section seemed to only have Math, English, Fun Games, and weekend games. The study tools were pretty cool and interactive. The tutorials seem to be just like notes of key information. The spelling section broke down spelling into activities and tasks to help become a better speller. The reading section broke books down by grade level and recommends some. The store is where you can buy materials (mostly books) and they are arranged by grade level for Pre-K through 5th, then 6-8th, and then high school level. This site also recommends books up to the college reading level. The one bad thing about this site is that is says you cannot print or reproduce anything from the site for any reason. The interactive stuff is goof for students though. Some of the games are fun, but one verb game had 60 sentences before it came to the end. Students might not be able to hold their interest that long on verbs.
Discipline(s): English/Language Arts and Math. Grade Levels(s):
Could be appropriate for K-12th grade. The Website address for this site is: http://www.timesaversforteachers.com. This site is broken down into 11 sections of books that are great teachers resources that can be sampled and bought. The four interactive books that can be bought for $32.95 are the Teacher’s Binder with the largest collection of commonly used classroom forms. The Substitute Teachers Instruction Kit, The Essay Kit, and the Classroom Awards book. The others are $27.95 and are not interactive. They are Report Card Comments which has 1,830 pre- made report card comments. Another book is 1,000 Quick Writing Ideas. There are also Spelling Activities, Quick Lesson Ideas, Math Forms, Fun Way to Learn Multiplication Facts, Just Teach It - an end of the year language unit. You can print and view some samples, but if you want the whole book then you need to purchase them. TimeSaversforTeachers.com (Melissa Quesada)

Description: An excellent interactive website for older children offering more advanced Math practice using games and a main character named Molly. Using “Molly” as a central character makes the students want to continue playing each of the 11 games on the website to best engage them and encourage them to “see Molly through to the end.” Each of the 11 games offers the students to choose their level of either “medium, hard or really hard,” making it a perfect site for all levels of students without discouraging them from not playing in case it’s too difficult for their individual levels. With such games as “Telling The Time” which integrates addition and subtraction to work out the correct time on a clock, and “Length and Weight Measurement” to test a student’s ability to judge a scale and a ruler, this website offers fun, low affective filter games for those who need more practice in Math or who excel in Math and would like to advance further in their studies.
