Introduction Chapter
From Eduwiki
The goal of the introduction is to motivate people to read the rest of the paper and provide a context for the study.
The introduction is the primary place where your personal voice appears in the paper. This is your chance to set up the motivation for the research. It is fine to tell relevant stories or other motivations for working on this project. You can use your experiences as a student, teacher, grad student as motivation as well as inspiration from reading the literature.
The outline for the introduction
- Statement of the issue or problem that you are trying to solve or improve upon
- Provide some context and the significance of the problem
- Describe (briefly and more in literature review) key prior research findings
- Describe (briefly and more in methods chapter) how you will approach the problem
- [optional] State the research question
Do not put your results in the introduction. One or two citations are appropriate for this chapter (likely to be repeated in your literature review).
