Description: This is a great site for kids to learn about health. The site includes recipes for healthy meals, information on how the body works, information on injuries and illnesses, and lots more. Students can use this site at home for personal use or for class. The site has a great section called, "Staying Healthy", which explains how kids can maintain a healthy lifestyle while having fun. The site gives useful information about exercising, eating healthy, and taking care of the human body. Children, parents, and teachers can all benefit from this site. (Katherine Warner)

Web Address: California Healthy Kids Resource Center provides credential candidates for the Multiple Subject Credential and Secondary Credential resources that comply with the California Commission on Teacher Credenialing Teaching Preparation Standards. Included are Sample Course Readings, Course Assignments, Student Health Data Sets, and Secondary Prevention Practice. There is an extensive Health Education Library (materials can be ordered and borrowed in a variety of subjects), Research-Validated Programs (including charts on Alcohol and Drugs, Sexual Health, Tobacco, and Violence research, charts, and PowerPoint presentations), School Health Laws (search engines in Health Instruction and School Health for Primary through High School levels), Trainings and Conferences (updated regularly for professional level conferences with links to sign up, and CD/DVD packages for continuing education training), Research and Resources (including an Evaluation of current California programs in downloadable pdf files and links to websites), and Assessment and Planning (includes the Official Department of Education list of approved food and beverages, California Health Education Content Standards, and surveys). Description: This Character Education Web site is filled with valuable free resources that help children grow both emotionally and ethically. The lesson plans, guides, and essays are designed to help children want to make good choices in their lives. The resources available include K-12 lesson plans, a how-to guide to service learning, and topics for productive ethical discussions with children. Teaching guides are grouped by elementary, middle, and high school and offer discussion questions, writing assignments, and student activities for teachers to use in creating their own unique lesson plan. Teachers will also find a service learning manual and examples of service learning projects that teach kids academic content in a real life context. Description: Sponsored by the National Dairy Council, this site is all about Nutrition, why teach it, FAQs, age-appropriate concepts, and tips for choosing internet sites on nutrition. Sections for Parents, Educators and School Nutrition Professionals provide Nutrition Lessons with hands-on, interactive activities for students from pre-K through upper elementary grades, modeling the My Pyramid food groups. Kids can play Fun Food Games. Classroom Calendars contain helpful ideas and nutrition tips to encourage healthy eating at home and in school. The emphasis on school wellness with benefits of breakfast, lunch, milk and snacks in school explore connections from classroom to the cafeteria and connections from classroom to home. Description: Designed by the U.S. DHHS, Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA), this site is for parents, caregivers and teachers of children aged 3 to 6 as a tool and guide for making healthy decisions. You will find family activities, positive discipline ideas and games in the Family section. The Educators section has tools, lesson plans and curriculum development to access, download and print. Problem-solving and communication skills are reinforced through games, songs and activities in the Children section. Each month explores a themed topic in the What’s New box. The site also offers Materials, Products, Links, E-mail updates and Awards. All materials are in the public domain and do not need permission for reprinting. Description: Playnormous offers fun health games and activities that emphasize the food pyramid and healthy eating. This is a good website for raising children’s awareness about health. The games are very engaging and interactive, such as “Juice Jumble” that teaches kids about identifying whether beverages are 100% real fruit juice, some fruit juice and mostly water, and just sugar meant to artificially taste like juice. With each game, there are a variety of teacher activities and quizzes.(Charlotte Purcell)

Some topics students can choose from are staying healthy, illness and injuries, how the body works, health problems, kids dictionary about medical words and kids talk. The student clicks on a particular subject they want to learn more about and they can watch a movie, do activities, take a quiz and read articles. They have a daily brain buzz and yummy recipes students can look at as well. (K. McLaughlin)

Description: This site is owned and operated by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). It is geared towards younger children but could be utilized by children of all ages. At the top of the home page it has the links: Disease, Food & Nutrition, Physical Activity, Your Safety, Your Life, and Your Body. Once you click on any one of those links a new page appears. On the left side there is a list of links for different topics and in the center of the page is an extra bit of information that applies to the subject as a whole. Back on the home page there are links to games, surveys, quizzes, a calendar of upcoming events, tips for the classroom, and a daily challenge. Also, at the top of the page there is a search bar for students to do research within the CDC’s direct website. (Dave Miller)

Description: This site has four main categories: Move, Eat, Talk, and Learn. The home page is just the portal to the links. The move link gives information about staying physically active, different activities that can be tried, and games. The Eat link provides recipes that children can make with their parents that are healthy. The Talk link allows children to send their parents an e-mail through the website about things they have discovered while on here. The key to the website as I see it is the last link for Learn. This provides a large amount of information about all of the topics listed above and allows the students to print a user-friendly version the information to take with them (especially if it is instructions to playing a game, for example). Also, there is a section for parents and different things they can do to keep their children healthy and engaged. (Dave Miller)

There are three different tabs on the top part of this page(for kids, for parents and for teens), which you can choose and receive information about everything connected with health. You can learn about how the body works, illnesses and injuries, staying safe and there is even a kids’ dictionary of medical words. For teachers it has great lesson plans and activities for the classroom and for students it has fun facts and at home activities including goal setting, healthy recipes and surveys. There is a Kids Cookbook with great healthy recipes in categories such as breakfast, drinks, salads, and pizza. There are also SuperKid Heroes and SuperKids Friends. (Michelle Karlin)

Description: This website provides valuable information for parents. It advises them on positive eating habits to enforce within families, how to stock up on healthy foods, getting kids involved in their health, and being a role model. Description: This site deals with all areas of health. Just one of the several tabs is recipes. Which includes recipes for children with dietary needs i.e. lactose intolerant, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, etc. Some other tabs include everyday illness and injury, staying healthy, dealing with feels, how the body works, and growing up. The information on this site is honest and factual. It would be helpful for those kids who have the questions but are to shy to talk to their parents or vice versa. There is also a game closet that has games a child could play and a list of different experiments they could conduct relating to health. (Michelle Moran)

It explores the relationships between obesity, nutrition, and socioeconomics in the contemporary U.S. The game's goal is not to tell people what to eat or how to exercise, but to demonstrate the complex, interwoven relationships between nutrition and factors like budgets, the physical world, subsidies, and regulations. You can choose starting weights and health conditions, including predispositions towards ailments like diabetes, heart disease, or food allergies. You'll have to construct menus and recipes, decide what to eat and what to avoid, exercise (or not), and run a restaurant business to serve the members of your community.
