Greeting students as they enter the class is something that is advocated by class management experts ([1]). But what difference does it really make? Is there a measurable "greeting effect" in the short term?

Types of greetings

  1. handshake
  2. eye contact
  3. named greeting
  4. formal names ("Hi Mr. Jones")
  5. informal names
  6. remarking on something positive about a person
  7. fist bump
  8. head nod
  • Fistbump greetings will spread less disease
  • some greetings will be more appropriate for higher grades
  • formal greetings will result in more respectful conversation
    • more structured conversations
  • informal greetings will result less stressful environment
