However, I do not think teachers should just take the lesson plans directly; rather they should examine them and add their own creativity to them. (Tova Leibovic)

Education World
Discipline: English
Grade level: 6th-12th
Website address: http://www.educationworld.com
Description: The first address is a site for teachers, including links to lesson planning, professional development, technology information and so on. From that page, students can link to the latter site that offers a link for students and parents. I clicked on the link for students and played the game “word search,” one of many language arts games offered. The game is not user friendly or easy. There is a board of twenty-five squares, five across and five down. The top right square has a letter in it and a point value associated with it that appears on to the right and left of the board and that decreases as time goes on. The student is supposed to type in a five-letter word that begins with the given letter. If that is the “right word” the student moves onto another letter and another word. If not, the student continues to guess at five-letter words that begin with the given letter until either a) he or she guesses the right word or b) they reach the last five boxes without being able to guess the word. I am not sure how useful it is to try to think of five-letter words that start with the same letter. (Jenny Graham)

NY Times
Discipline: English/Multi
Grade level: 3rd-12th
Website address: http://www.nytimes.com/learning/students/index.html
Description: The Student Connections site associated with the New York Times Learning Network is very easy to negotiate and, at the same time, very sophisticated. In the center of the student home page there is a headline with a current event and a link to that story, and below it a related lesson plan, detailing the grades for which it would be appropriate and the subjects it relates to. Below this, there are links that allow student to “explore the learning network by subject,” including American history, civics, math and economics, etc., and below that section appear links to educational resources in stories from the Times. I selected a link from the far right under the heading “Student Connections,” called “Word of the Day.” I was given the definition to the word abide, the option to hear it said aloud, an example of it being used in a Times story, and then a Kaplan test prep multiple-choice question utilizing the same word. There also appears a backlist of recent words of the day, an archive of words of the day, and a link to their partner site, Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day. (Jenny Graham)

There is a search bar, an option to sign in or register, and further down the page a link that says “How I’m Going,” which provides the user with information about grants and loans. At the very bottom of the home page on the far left there is the “college q&a question of the wee;” this week it is about finding a tutor once you get to your campus. I explored the link “what to do,” and found information about selecting an appropriate school, taking the right tests, applying for admissions, early preparation, and an option to make a personalized “college road map.” (Jenny Graham)

Website: Magic Key Adventures
Discipline: Language Arts
Grade level: 1-3
Website address: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/magickey/adventures/index.shtml
Description: This website from the BBC has interactive games with characters from a popular children’s book. Taking characters from a book and putting them into an educational computer game can work wonders for those students who spend time on computers and watching TV. This approach to having students practice grammar and punctuation in a computer game will be also useful to students with special needs, such as ADHD students or perhaps those with psycho-motor delays, as it helps them practice and learn Language Arts skills in an adaptive manner. For the more advanced students, there are games for word replacement, ie synonym skills and character personality descriptions, which are often difficult to teach or learn from simply a text or workbook. Integrating a popular children’s book into an interactive website helping students of both higher and less high levels of Language Arts is both a good low-stress practice for the students and makes this an excellent website. Grade: Pre-K—6th
Website: www.scholastic.com
Description:Although Scholastic.com is full of advertisements and trying to get people to buy their books, there are useful tools on their website. One that I would like to discuss is their interactive online reading books. Students can listen to a book online while looking at the pictures of the book. This is superior to listening to tape recorder while reading a book, because the young reader controls when the computer reads each line. In addition, there are blank spots that the child must fill in with a word at the bottom of the screen. This would be a good activity for a beginning reader. There are many interactive books available to read on the website.(Raquel Kloostra).

A voice sounds it out slowly, emphasizing the “a” and “t” sound. Next, children are to select various letters, like “b” or “c” and combine them with “at”. The computer sounds out the word slowly again, and a picture of the new word pops up.(Raquel Kloostra).

http://www.starfall.com k-6 (language arts) Starfall is a web site geared towards the lower primary grades although it can be used by anyone who is a struggling reader or who needs additional support in language arts. It is a very encouraging website that is filled with rich stories, games, and colorful animations. The program is set up to support reading and language arts. It begins with the alphabet where the children will learn sound/symbol correspondence. Next is the “Learning to Read” section which introduces vowel sounds through a systematic, sequential approach to phonics. Then comes the section titled, “It’s Fun to Read” which explores a variety of genres and topics that are intended to expand and enrich reading vocabulary and comprehension. Finally the last section is titled “I am Reading” which is a transition to reading for learning and pleasure. Intonation, expression, inflection, and fluency are all incorporated in this section. This website does a great job incorporating the several steps required when learning to read. (Carrie Franz)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/ 2-8 (math & language arts) Skillswise has proven to be one of the most rewarding websites that I have come across as a teacher. The content is closely correlated with the California State Content Standards through the use of highly interactive games. The sounds and special effects are quite impressive for a free website! This website is also a great resource for tutors including lesson plans, printable tracking sheets and an expert column for advice and information on basic skills issues. Although the content is aligned specifically to UK standards, the resources are helpful to anyone needing them. The site also contains a glossary and a listing of all the games on the site categorized by skill area making it easy to navigate. (Carrie Franz)

http://www.sesamestreet.org/home k-1 (language arts, fine arts) The Sesame Street website is very closely correlated to the television series. The characters are the same and offer a wide array of games, music, and art areas for the kids to explore. The sounds are one of the most engaging features as pretty much anything on the site has a sound associated to it. This is incredibly motivating for young 4, 5, and 6 year olds. The pages are also very easy to maneuver around which is quite important for beginning computer users. (Carrie Franz)

www.funbrain.com k-8 (math & language arts) Fun Brain is a website that that is based around fun and games. If you are looking for a website that will keep your students learning and entertained for hours, this is the one! Most kids are so enthralled with the effects that they don’t realize that they are learning. There is also a section for kids under six to play with their parents with online web books and an Entertainment Center arcade just for fun. This is a great site that is getting better all the time. The best part is that it is free. (Carrie Franz)

http://www.kidsknowit.com/ k-8 (math, science, language arts, geography, biology, social studies) This website is nice because it covers almost all content areas. I do wish that it was better designed since it is not very kid friendly for younger students. However, as a teacher I have been able to pull off many ideas for lessons in my classroom. Included are movies, music, games, and funnies, in addition to tons of information on a wide variety of subjects. More than thirty free educational movies are available for teachers to use to supplement their lessons. The videos cover such topics as absolute values, adjectives, averages, eclipses, acceleration, biomes, hurricanes, and more. Each movie ends with an interactive online quiz. (Carrie Franz)

http://www.readinga-z.com/ k-8 (language arts)

Reading A-Z is an incredibly helpful website for teachers. It is a language arts website that has thousands of resources. Although there is a fee for a yearly subscription, it is well worth the money. All of the resources on this website are leveled for beginning/struggling readers – advanced readers. The stories, that are designed to be printed out, have vivid and realistic pictures. For example, during the 2009 elections, there were biographies, poems, etc. on John McMain and Barrack Obama. The pictures were actual photos from their childhood and current debates. This website is constantly updated and always has current articles and readings which is what makes is so useful as a teacher. It is perfect for a classroom with leveled reading groups as you can find readings on almost any subject. For instance, during science we were learning about adaptations. I searched the website for reading and there were several reading, at various levels, on all types of animals and adaptations. One downside is that it does cost money, but well worth it! It is great for phonics and phonemic awareness and can help to engage students in activities based on lessons they are learning in class. The only negative I have for this site is that it can get confusing, and the students need to be instructed of exactly how to use it (as in which buttons to click on and when) so that it can be used effectively. It is completely free and anyone can use it. (Amanda Griffith)

Website: http://pbskids.org/sesame/

Description: Sesame Street’s website is a wonderful tool for children. This website is very clean and uses pictures to communicate instead of words. All of the shows characters have pictures on the right hand side. For example, on Cookie Monster’s web page there is a Letter of the Day game. You have to feed Cookie Monster a ‘cookie’ that begins with the letter for that day. The word is written below the picture and if you roll your mouse over the cookie you can hear children say the word. (Today is ‘L’ and I fed him a lion and leaf cookie) If you feed him the wrong cookie, Cookie Monster says he wants to eat that cookie but can’t. If it’s the correct letter, he eats the cookie only in the way Cookie Monster can. This is a great tool to help children with phonics and phonemic awareness. (Michelle Moran

Analogy Jeopardy

The topic of this software is verbal analogies. The game is available for 1-2 players, and is arranged on the screen like a game of jeopardy. Students pick a numbered point box under a category and are given a related analogy to complete. The software keeps score, like in a normal game of jeopardy, but does not deduct for incorrect answers.

It could be beneficial for students who are struggling with the CAHSEE, since there is a section devoted to analogies. Having taught the CAHSEE prep course, I found that analogies are a difficult point for most students who are struggling with the English language. By nature, analogies require students to understand vocabulary and draw conclusions about the relationships between words. Once they have done that, they need to imitate this relationship. Demonstrating all of these skills requires a great deal of practice. This game gives students the opportunity to practice these skills in a fun competitive way.

Shakespearean Murder Mystery

This is an interactive murder mystery where you have to explore through rooms in a castle to solve a murder. You interview the characters in the castle and explore to search for clues. The place is full of Shakespearean quotes and facts about his life, the Globe theater, etc. It's free access on the BBC website. You just have to sign up and log on. It would be appropriate for high school students (9-12) and above. The game is not overly complex, but I don't know that it would hold the interest of younger students. Storylineonline

Description: This sight offers information on Shakespeare's life, poetry, and plays. One of the most unique features is a series of interactive trivia games which test the player for knowledge of Shakespearean characters and vocabulary. Also, they cover a broad range of Shakespearean trivia- perhaps too broad. However, the strengths inherent in these games are silliness and wit. Students will likely enjoy them, and pick up useful information along the way. (Stephanie Ann Foster.) Provides a simple game for students to select arguments based on a logical appeal. Students are given four options regarding the topic of the argument and then are given four choices for an argument. The game audience determines whether the argument selected is based upon logic or opinion. After the game has been completed, students have the option to gain further information on persuasive arguments and writing by selecting Bitesize Revision. This takes students to a page that answers questions about persuasive writing such as, "what is bias?" After students feel comfortable with argument and persuasive writing, they can take the online quiz attached to the game. The quiz is 10 questions long and can be taken online. There is also an option for teachers to print out the quiz to give to students in paper form. The game is free and does not require registration with the site. (Shirliza Guadamuz)

State of Debate

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/games/

For grades: 7-12

The software is easy to use and very fun. The game begins with commercials from Justco, a company who makes a law to ban “non-adults” from using loud music and wearing hoodies. Then you are approached by a woman on the street accusing you of breaking the law because you are wearing a hoodie. You are then given several options of arguments to make: I am sick and running a fever, I didn’t know about the law, this law is stupid. From your argument you move on in the game. The point is to maintain your composure, never lose your temper, and win your audience over. The game is great because it teaches kids about argumentation and how to truly convince your opponent. By making clear and logical arguments you will win, losing your temper and being angry makes you lose immediately. The game also teaches about censorship. This game could lead into a wonderful debate about censorship.
