Discipline: Classroom Management
Grade Level: K-12
Website address: http://www.newmanagement.com/
Description: IRick Morris retired in 2008 and founded his company on classroom management. This website correlates with seminars he gives to teachers of all grade levels, and provides sources for ordering music cds, timers, overhead projector spinners, his books, and free downloadable books that are not yet published. Among them is a book on using an iPod for PowerPoint. Rick Morris visited CSUN in September 2009 and many in attendance were student teachers, credentialed teachers, and CSUN Education faculty. All were entertained and amazed at Morris' insight into human behavior in children and adults. He advocates for students having power and choice, with learning being fun. He shows teachers how to save their voice. The materials on this website that can be ordered include sign language symbols for keeping students on task, and numbering systems to save teachers hours of paperwork so that their focus is on the students. Discipline: Links for every single subject, with lesson plans for all subjects
Grade Levels: K-12 teachers
Description: This website has anything you would ever need as a teacher. As the website’s slogan says it is, “The Educators Best Friend.” It has six different tabs at the top, which are all filled with an overwhelming amount of information. The tabs are Lesson Plans, Professional Development, Administrators, Tech Integration, School, Issues and Marketplace. I specifically enjoyed the Lesson Plans tab. It has different creative ideas for specific holidays, and hundreds of printables for students to take home. It has lesson plans by the subject and features of a specific lesson plan. If you search by your specific subject, it will give you hundreds of ideas and lesson plans for all the different grade levels. Alternatively, you can search by a specific feature that you know you want to incorporate into your lesson plan. I think as a future educator, this site will be one of my top 5 most visited sites. Google Calendar
Discipline: Classroom Organization
Grade Level: Not specified, Teaching tool
Website address: www.google.com/calendar (Jeanette M. King)
Description: Although one might not consider Google Calendar to be a teaching tool, I have found it indispensable. You can schedule many types of appointments and deadlines on different calendars. This enables you to overlay all your appointments for your entire life, or you can separate, share, and print out individual ones for specific purposes.
For example, I run a business out of my home, I tutor, I have two children with various activities, and I attend CSUN. Google Calendar allows me to overlay all calendars into one main schedule, but I may view just my assignments, print up the kids appointments for my husband, post my craft shows on my website, and have the parents of my tutoring students view and adjust their schedule from home – only viewing the information for their needs.
They do us a disservice by not teaching time management in the teaching credential programs, as this is a challenge to most teachers I know. It’s exciting to find a tool that works and is completely free.
