Hi Ed Tech Masters Students,
We are a week away from the beginning of cohort 3 of the Educational Technology Masters Program. I believe that most of you have received your acceptance letter by now – or if not, hopefully you and I are in communication. Just to review, classes start next week on Wednesday (8/26). We will meet in room 2121B in the education building at 4pm for Prof. Herr’s 619 class. Later you will have 618 with me in the same room (we will have a short break for dinner in between classes). Do check out the parking options before you come (day permit, semester or street) so you can make it on time.
Some of you have already received permission numbers and registered for class – but for the rest we can do enrollment on Wednesday.
This address edtechma-g@csun.edu will be our listserv for the cohort – if you are getting this email than you are on it. If you want to change the email address on the list, than email me individually. You are welcome to send an email to the list so long as it is appropriate.
Several people have asked about books, software and computers that you might need. The only book for the first semester is for SED 618:
The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning (Paperback)
by Richard Mayer (Editor, 2005)
http://www.amazon.com/Cambridge-Handbook-Multimedia-Handbooks-Psychology/dp/0521547512
(bookstore should have some)
As for software, we have everything you will need in our labs, but to work at home you may want a copy of Adobe Creative Suite. Currently the computers have CS3, but we may be moving to CS4 soon. So you may want to go ahead and get CS4 (student edition is $400). We will use this suite in several classes but we know it is a lot of money so we will make sure you are aware of low cost alternatives wherever appropriate.
You certainly will want to have a reasonable computer and internet access. Also a sizable flash drive (~4GB) is very valuable. By the way, our labs are mostly Macintosh, but we can run windows when needed.
I think we have a great group this year - we are completely full (and turned away several people) with a diverse and talented group of students (you!). We are excited to get started. See you next week!
