Leading Math Ed Research to talk at CSUN

James Hiebert has been an important voice in how we think about math education.  He and Jim Stigler (UCLA) wrote the books The Learning Gap and The Teaching Gap in which they contrasted education in this country with other countries (e.g. Japan & China) who participated in the TIMSS study.

Algebra Learning Network Starts Pilot Testing

The Algebra Learning Net has started testing out the system with a small number of teachers this summer.  The Gear-Up team (and a few others) are helping us work out the bugs and smooth out some of the edges on the site.  We will announce a fully operational website later this summer!

Algebra Learning Network Surveys Math Teachers

The Algebra Learning Net is a website that is being created by the CSUN Department of Secondary Education in an effort to support Algebra teachers.  Unlike many math sites, this website is not simply a collection of facts and problems, but an online community of teachers who are facing the same types of challenges.  This community will provide a peer group for teachers to ask questions, share ideas, collaborate and comiserate.

The site will be open for use in late summer 2007.  Prior to this we are conducting a survey of math teachers to find out about how they use the internet now and what features they are most interested in for the ALN.  Based on these results we will tune the ALN site to match teachers' needs.

If you are interested in this site, please complete the survey and add your name to the email list .
