First ALN Blogging Contest Winners Announced

ALN Blogging Challenge Winners

The first ever ALN blogging contest is finished!   The blogs that came out of the contest were some of the best that we have had on the ALN.  Teachers posted about their classes, different appoaches they used, problems with testing and technology.  So the contest was successful in starting to generate a whole new type of information on the site - teachers reflections on their classes.  Next year we will have another contest and hopefully the experience here (and the lure of great prizes) will generate even more contributions.

Winner:  Michael

Michael's blogs covered a lot of topics from adoption of math texts to alternative maths to robots and clickers.  It became a forum where he could talk about the many different ways he was connecting kids with algebra.  In some ways Michael's comments were so well thought out that they may have intimidated other would be bloggers (hopefully not, we welcome all kinds).  For his contributions, michael recieves a year subscriptions to Gizmos!

2nd Place Blogger: hrudolph

hrudolph blogs from Ohio and used her blog to talk about what they are doing with their success academies and in her "Jack of all Trades" post explained about all the many different things she is doing in her class, with the math forum etc (over 2000 words long! an ALN blogging record).  For her contribution, h recieves a 6 month subscription to Gizmos!

Runner up lynnwinner

Our runner up got a late start to blogging, but was active readers and commentors on the other blogs.  Lynn gets a 3 month subscriptioins to Gizmos!

ALN Announcement

(for wide distribution)

Announcing the official opening of the Algebra Learning Network (ALN  http://edutech.csun.edu/aln)  – a website for secondary mathematics teachers to connect with peers and share best practices.  The ALN website will serve as a hub for teachers looking to improve their classes and boost performance.  Mathematics education is vitally important and Algebra in particular is a critical class.  Many schools have Algebra pass rates below 50%, and some point to failures in Algebra classes as a leading cause for students dropping out of high school.  Despite this, California and other states are pushing to have all students take Algebra in middle school.  This is a critical time for math teachers to come together and find ways to meet these challenges.  The internet can play a key role in supporting teachers by quickly disseminating the tools and techniques that can make a difference with students.

This week we will be presenting activities from the Math Morsels conference at CSUN (this coming Saturday 11/25) and introducing the new Problem of the Month feature.  The ALN Problem of the Month provides an opportunity for teachers to assess their students on key topics and then compare their results with other classes.

ALN seeks to provide teachers with an exchange for ideas and support that is separate from both students and administrators (Teachers only!).  Teachers come to the ALN to share their experiences and connect with others facing similar challenges.  The key to the site is the participation of the teachers.  The more people who come and contribute to the discussion and resources, the better the site will be.  Come check it out and see how the ALN can work for you.
